1. Visit a chocolate factory.
A visit to a chocolate factory with kids is an unforgettable experience that will leave your family with lasting memories. From watching the chocolate-making process to sampling the delicious treats, a trip to a chocolate factory is sure to be a hit with children of all ages!
It was a sure hit for my family when we visited the Simon Coll chocolate factory – a famous chocolate brand here in Spain (also exports to other countries) – which is just less than 30 minutes drive from our village.
The kids loved all the free chocolates (and the adults, too). We also enjoyed some shopping in their chocolate shop.
Before you go, be sure to research the factory you plan to visit and find out what kind of experiences they offer. Most chocolate factories offer guided tours, interactive activities, and samples for the whole family to enjoy.
Once you arrive, you can learn about the chocolate-making process and explore the factory’s machinery and equipment. You can also watch the chocolatiers at work and even help with the production of a few chocolates (if part of the tour).
After the tour, the whole family can enjoy the delicious treats and take home some sweet memories.
2. Go to a water park.
Visiting a water park as a family for a staycation is a great way to have a fun and exciting time. Not only do water parks have numerous slides and pools to enjoy, but they also offer other activities such as mini-golf, go-karts, dolphin shows, and more. Plus, they are generally affordable and family-friendly.
Make sure to research the water park before you go to find out about the activities and attractions that are best for your family’s age range.
Additionally, it is also a good idea to check the park’s safety regulations, take note of any restrictions or prohibited items, and also check the weather conditions before booking tickets to make sure that you’re not booking on rainy days or in bad weather conditions.
Finally, also check if any discounts are available on tickets or food. With a little bit of preparation, you can ensure that your family’s staycation at a water park will be an unforgettable experience and as inexpensive, as possible.
And make sure to bring enough sunscreen, hats, and water bottles for everyone!

Aside from the fun, visiting an aquarium is also an educational trip not only for the kids but for parents, too. What a fun way to learn about marine life as a family.
I was able to visit Barcelona Aquarium before when I was still single, and going back with my family is definitely on the staycation bucket list, and hopefully, it will be this year!
4. Visit a museum.
Visiting a museum with your kids is a fun and educational way to spend time together. Not only do you get to explore the world of art, history, science, and more, but you also get to learn about different cultures, people, and events from around the world.
You can also take advantage of the museum’s interactive exhibits, activities, and events to make the experience even more hands-on. And, of course, there’s always the opportunity to take some amazing family photos while you’re there.

Don’t forget to take lots of pictures!
9. Visit a zoo.
Visiting the local zoo with your kids is another brilliant idea to have a fun-filled family staycation. Not only can you explore the world of exotic animals as a family, but you can also learn about different species, their habitats, and how to help protect them.
Kids will surely love seeing the animals up close and learning about their unique features and behaviors. Plus, there are usually plenty of interactive exhibits, shows, and activities to keep them entertained.
Be sure to pack some snacks and drinks (might be expensive if you buy them inside), and bring along a camera to capture all the special moments.
Our toddlers had so much fun visiting Barcelona Zoo for the first time. #1 was unstoppable in asking questions about the animals and repeating their names over and over again.
I discovered Tiqets in the summer of 2021 and have been booking our entrances to amusement parks, zoos, and places (when applicable) through it. We booked our entrance to Barcelona Zoo thru Tiqets and we didn’t have to fall in line to wait. I just showed my phone with the booking and we were let in without problems.
10. Have a backyard camp-out.
Camping out in the backyard is a great way to enjoy some quality time together as a family without leaving home – saving you a lot of driving time and money. It’s a fun way to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, tell stories, roast marshmallows, and look up at the stars while cuddling up in your sleeping bags.
Gather up the tent, sleeping bags, and all the other camping supplies you need, and set up a mini campsite in your backyard. Just make sure to prepare for the cold weather and have a plan for the kids if it looks like it’s going to rain.
11. Explore the nearest beach.
My kids love building sandcastles and holes, swimming in the ocean, and playing with their toy cars (yes, they bring toy cars wherever we go)!
Pack a yummy lunch and some snacks, and bring along some beach toys for the kids to play with. You can even bring along a frisbee and a volleyball net for a friendly game of beach volleyball.
It’s a great way to enjoy some quality time together and make some wonderful memories under the sun. Just make sure to apply enough sunscreen to protect everyone from getting too much sun, and bring along plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Or if your family is not very “sun” people like my family, go to the beach in the afternoon when it’s no longer very sunny.
Don’t forget to take lots of pictures to capture all the special moments. After a day of fun in the sun, you’ll be sure to have some wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
Going to the nearest beach is another family staycation idea that my family loves!
12. Eat ice cream for snacks at a local snack bar.
Eating ice cream for snacks as a family is a great way to bond and have fun! Everyone loves ice cream and it’s a great way to cool off on hot summer days.
This is one of my family’s favorite things to do during the summer. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get together and enjoy a tasty treat. We love to go to different local ice cream shops near our place and try different flavors.
13. Have a movie night.
A movie night with the kids is another great way to enjoy a cozy evening in with the family, and it can be totally free if you can find a free age-appropriate movie online, or in your Netflix or amazon video subscription. But if not, it’s very inexpensive to rent a movie that everyone can enjoy.
If your kids are older, you can even make your own movie night with them by getting them to make a movie of their own. If you can’t agree on a movie, watching fun videos is a great alternative.
Pop some popcorn, make some snacks, have some laughs, and settle in for a night of family bonding. Make some memories and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures!
14. Eat out at a restaurant for the first time.
Eating out at a restaurant for the first time can be an exciting experience for the whole family. Exploring different types of cuisines and trying new dishes can be a great way to bond with your family and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Take note of the restaurants that you want to try, especially those with funny or catchy names.
We once passed by a restaurant named ” No te va a gustar” which translates to “you won’t like it” and it piqued my husband’s curiosity he just can’t stop talking about it and our older boy wouldn’t stop saying that he wants us to eat at ” no te va a gustar”. So, we finally went one day and it was a very memorable experience! It was a restaurant that serves Peruvian dishes!
Once you’re there, you can all order something different and share your meals so that everyone can try a bit of everything.
Be sure to take pictures of all your delicious dishes to capture the special moment. This is a great way to introduce the kids to the world of dining out in a fun and exciting way.
15. Go village hopping.
Village hopping is one of my family’s favorite family staycation ideas! If you’re wondering what is this, it is simply driving to the neighboring village to look around the house designs, the gardens, and other facilities around the village.
We went home early from my in-laws once and the husband suggested on a whim that we passed by one of the villages to check it out. And since then, village hopping has become a regular thing for our family, especially during weekends when we’re just home and feeling bored.
If you haven’t tried it before, go and try it, it’s so much fun!
16. Have an indoor scavenger hunt.
An indoor scavenger hunt is a classic family staycation idea that is perfect for kids of all ages. It’s a great way to keep everyone entertained without leaving the comfort of your home.
You can create your own scavenger hunt by hiding clues and items around your home and having the kids search for them. This is a great way to teach your kids problem-solving skills as they try to find clues and items.
You can even set a timer and add some fun competition between the children. A prize can also be added at the end of the scavenger hunt to add even more excitement.
17. Go on a bike ride.
Going on a bike ride is one of the most fun and exciting family staycation ideas that I really want to try one day when #2 is older. As of this writing, he can’t ride a bike yet, though he has a motorcycle that he moves around using his legs.
It is a great way to get some exercise and bond with your family. It is also an opportunity to explore the area you are in and discover new places.
Make sure to plan your route in advance, but also leave some room for surprises and discovery. and don’t forget to pack some snacks and drinks before you go.
18. Visit a local farm.
Visiting a local farm with your kids is a great way to get the kids out of the house and teach them about the importance of farming and taking care of the environment.
Kids will love seeing the animals up close and learning about the different types of animals, as well as the different fruits and vegetables that are grown on the farm.
You can also take part in activities such as milking cows, collecting eggs, and gathering hay. Plus, you can buy fresh produce from the farm and make a delicious meal together.
Be sure to bring along some snacks and plenty of water for the journey, and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures to capture the special moments.
We live in a village surrounded by grape farms and peach farms. The peach farms are so beautiful when the flowers are in bloom. Hopefully, we can go on the next flowering season when #2 is older and capable of walking for longer (since the terrain is not stroller-friendly).
19. Have a costume party.
A family costume party is another exciting family staycation idea. Get creative with your costumes and let each family member pick their own. You can even make it a family costume, with everyone wearing the same theme.
Set up a photo booth with props and decorations, so you can take pictures and have a blast. You can also play some fun party games like charades or trivia.
You can even set up a mini dance floor and have a family dance-off! Serve some snacks and drinks, and you have a fun and entertaining family staycation that everyone can enjoy.
20. Have fun at IKEA.
If there’s an IKEA near your place, go and have a visit! It is one of the best family staycation ideas. My kids get excited every time we go for an IKEA visit.
Not only is it a great way to spend quality time together, but it’s also a great opportunity to introduce your kids to the world of interior design and give them the chance to explore home decoration ideas.
Even if you’re not buying any furniture or home decor, an IKEA visit is always fun as the family can try out quirky product names to cozy sofas and mattresses. IKEA has something to offer everyone.
Plus, there’s always a delicious Swedish Food Market where you can buy Swedish delicacies and snacks. And it’s a bonus if the IKEA near you has a huge snack place with a playground for kids.
Our favorite IKEA is IKEA Sabadell, because it’s huge and less crowded, and it’s around 30 minutes drive from home. We went there recently, and to our delight, they’ve added a playground section on the side close to the area with tables that are exclusive for families. Another reason that encourages us to visit IKEA more often!
21. Visit a nearby city.
Visiting a nearby city can be a great way to break up the monotony of everyday life and just enjoy the moment with your family. It’s another way to bond and create new memories as a family by exploring a new place together without driving or flying far.
Explore the city’s attractions, restaurants, parks, and so much more, but without rushing to see a lot of things. Just take your time and enjoy the slow-paced way.
Make sure to take lots of photos for remembrance and maybe a souvenir item, as well.
22. Cook together.
Cooking together as a family is a great way to have fun while learning a new skill and an easy way to create a delicious meal together.
It can be an opportunity to teach your children about nutrition, safety in the kitchen, and even different cultures.
Start with a simple recipe and let each member of the family take part in the cooking process. Choose a recipe that everyone will enjoy and that is easy to prepare.
Assign duties to each person, so everyone is involved. Let your kids pick the ingredients, measure them out, and do the mixing while you do the actual cooking. After the meal is ready, enjoy it together and talk about your cooking experience as a family.
23. Go fishing.
Fishing is another family staycation idea that kids of all ages will surely enjoy. And this is something that the husband is very excited to do once the boys are a bit older.

Make sure to bring the necessary gear, such as fishing rods, bait, and other supplies, and pick a spot that is safe for kids and that has enough fish to catch.
Let your kids take turns casting the line and have fun.
Don’t forget to bring snacks and drinks too, and maybe even a picnic lunch (fishing areas are usually far from stores), that way, you can spend the whole day out fishing and relaxing with your family.
24. Have a spa day.
Having a spa day as a family is the perfect way to relax and unwind together. Get creative and plan a spa day filled with pampering activities such as foot massages, facials, manicures, and more.
Look out for deals, so, it won’t be an expensive family staycation, and book in advance to get good, affordable deals.
You can also opt to make your own DIY spa treatments with ingredients found in your kitchen to make them even more affordable. Create a fun and relaxing atmosphere with candles, soft music, and light snacks.
