A super easy oatmeal breakfast without the added sugar that can be made quickly!
Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 12 minutes
Course Breakfast
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup dried oatmeal
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • water (enough to cover the oatmeal)
  • 1 cup frozen berries (any berries will do)
  • 1 tbsp almond flakes (or other nuts of choice)
  • bit of milk or yogurt (optional)
  • additional toppings (optional)

Notes

1. Place the oatmeal and chia seeds in a pot and cover them with enough water.
2. Cook over medium heat and stir constantly to avoid burning and sticking at the bottom of the pot.
3. Halfway through the cooking, add the cup of frozen berries and continue cooking.
4. Add more water if you see that the oatmeal and berries are getting dry, but still need more cooking time. It is done when it’s already thick and creamy.
5. Put into a bowl, stir in a bit of yogurt or milk to make it more creamy (optional), and then add the almond flakes or other preferred nuts.

Lessons Learned From Making Frozen Berries Oatmeal

  • You can also add sugar or honey to this recipe for a sweeter result. But I eat it without added sugar or honey to limit my sugar intake as much as possible. I now rely on fruits for my sweets cravings most of the time after doing the 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge.
  • You can also add a banana for additional sweetness, instead of adding sugar or honey.
  • You can use any type of frozen berries. I have already tried blueberries and mixed berries.
  • You can also use other nuts aside from almond flakes. I have already tried walnuts and hazelnuts.
  • It is ok to make it without chia seeds. I have already made it several times without chia seeds because I forgot.
  • You can add more toppings if you like. I have already tried adding chocolate shavings and avocado. Though you should be careful in not adding too much, especially if you are trying to lose some weight.

Can I Add Frozen Berries To My Oatmeal? Are They Healthy?

Yes, you can certainly add frozen berries into your oatmeal, and frozen berries are healthy, just like fresh berries.

Frozen berries or frozen fruits, in general, are harvested at the peak of ripeness, which means that they’re at their most nutritious form.

Frozen berries and all frozen fruits don’t undergo blanching, thus retaining all the nutrients. Frozen vegetables usually undergo blanching (placing the vegetables in boiling water for s short time to kill harmful bacteria and to prevent the loss of color, flavor, and texture) which causes the loss of some nutrients.

NorthWest Wild Foods stated that commercially grown berries (like many crops) are often exposed to many pesticides. But the berries that are grown with the intention of being frozen are exposed to fewer amount of pesticides compared to the ones grown with the intention of selling fresh in the grocery stores.

According to the article, the reason for this is that large amounts of pesticides and sprays have to be applied before and after harvest for the fresh berries to maintain a good appearance for a long time while being transported to reach the consumers.

It also states that 52 different pesticide residues were found on a fresh blueberry, while only 21 pesticide residues were found on a frozen berry based on data from the USDA pesticide testing program.

With this information, frozen berries are actually a good choice. And besides, frozen berries are cheaper compared to fresh ones, and if you opt to buy organic, the price is even higher.

Berries Are Low In Sugar

This is the main reason why I started to eat oatmeal with berries, instead of my usual oatmeal with banana that I had been eating almost everyday for almost 4 years now with a teaspoon or two of our own raw honey.

Berries are one of the fruits with low sugar content. Raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries are among the 11 best low-sugar fruits with only 5 (raspberries) and 7 grams (strawberries and blackberries) of sugar per cup.

Aside from being low in sugar, berries are loaded with antioxidants, fibers, and many nutrients. Here are 11 reasons why berries are among the healthiest food on earth and why you should incorporate them more into your diet.
