How to Explain Easter to Kids in Simple Words?

Easter is another term for the resurrection of Jesus, three days after His death on the cross. It is an important holiday and one of the major feasts in Christian Churches to celebrate the end of Lent.

Easter is always celebrated on a Sunday, but the date varies everytime. This year 2022, Easter will be celebrated on April 17.

What book of the Bible tells the story of Easter?

The Easter story can be found in all 4 Gospel books of the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Matthew 26-28

Mark 15-16

Luke 22-24

John 17-20

Though kids might not totally understand yet the significance of Easter, it’s a simple way to explain to them by reading the Easter story that can be found in the Bible (use the Gospel story of choice).

You don’t have to be thorough in your explanation, just make it easy for the kids. Make sure to mention to them the main characters of the story: Jesus – the son of God, the chief priests, the Jewish leaders, the disciples, Judas Iscariot, Mary, James, the mother of James, and Simon Peter.

Here’s a chronological order of the main events of the story as a guide: the plot against Christ Jesus, Jesus anointed at Bethany, Judas agrees to betray Jesus, the Last Supper, Jesus predicts Peter’s denial, Gethsemane, Jesus arrested, Jesus before the Sanhedrin, Peter disowns Jesus, Judas hangs himself, Jesus before Pilate, the soldiers mock Jesus, the crucifixion of Jesus, the death of Jesus, the burial of Jesus, the guard at the tomb, the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, the guard’s report, and the great commission.

Feel free to omit some scenes depending on the age of your kids. If they’re way younger, you don’t have to explain about Judas hanging himself, or mentioning the leading priests, teachers of the law, or Jewish leaders because they might just confuse them.

Instead, you can explain to them in an exciting, mysterious way about the curtain of the temple being torn, the entrance of the tomb being open, the empty tomb, the linen cloth or white robe found on the tomb, Jesus’ body not being found, the angel of the Lord, and so on.

It’s also a great way to talk about related events, stories, and questions like Palm Sunday, why they put “INRI” which means king of the Jews on the cross of Jesus, why they put a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, what happened to the body of the Lord Jesus, and other related questions.

The Importance of Easter

Whether you explain a simple story of Easter or a bit detailed one for the older kids, the most important thing is to be able to explain to them the importance of Easter. This is the day that we celebrate the great mercy of God as He died for all of us for the forgiveness of sins to give us new life.

And that we have to remember this good news all the time, especially during difficult times, so we will always have a living hope in God, knowing that He will never abandon us, that He will always be there for us, just like Him showing up to his disciples (who were experiencing difficult time due to his death) on the day of His resurrection.

But of course, you have to explain it to them in a simple way. This great power – the power of his resurrection should not only be remembered by our kids, but also by us, adults, to help us get through all the challenges and difficulties in life.
