Here’s my Casona de el Castañiu review based on my family’s stay in this super beautiful and tranquil accommodation during our vacation in Asturias last July 12-15, 2021.
We stayed in this rural hotel during our entire stay in Asturias and my husband didn’t mind at all that he has to drive from the hotel to Mieres for work because the place is really worth the extra drive!
Casona de el Castañiu Review
Casona de el Castañiu Location
El Castañiu is a 3-star rural hotel located in Serrapio, Asturias, a 20-25 minutes drive from Mieres, Asturias, and around 34-40 minutes drive from Oviedo.

Casona de el Castañiu Property
This rural hotel in Asturias is a two storey hotel surrounded by mountains and pure nature! It was rebuilt to reflect a typical Asturian stone house respecting the traditional architecture.
The view is very beautiful, the husband said that it looks like those seen in magazine spreads! The surrounding is also very quiet and the air is so fresh!
On the upper side of the property is a farm (we saw a man working with his tractor) and on the left side is a gated grazing area for sheep. The sound of the sheep’s bells is lovely music to listen to – it’s so soothing and calming!
In addition, el castañiu is on top of the hill that sets it apart from the other houses.
GARDEN AND FRONT YARD
Cason de el Castañiu has a very well-maintained garden and front yard, very picturesque and instagrammable (though I don’t have Instagram anymore)! 🙂
The dew makes the grass wet every morning, though, that I had to change the kids’ socks twice because they were playing in the garden before and after breakfast.
But it’s totally worth it because they had so much fun just by biking and exploring the garden and front yard.
Horreo is very typical in every Asturian house in the past as explained by the husband. It is a small structure separate from the main house that serves as a storage for food.
It is built in wood or stone and raised from the ground by pillars. Each pillar has a flat stone to make sure that rats can’t get inside the horreo.
The stairs were also built separately from the main structure to make sure that rats can’t have access to the horreo.
#2 had so much fun climbing the stairs of the horreo many times!
Casona de el Castañiu Rooms
There are only 5 rooms in el castañiu (4 upstairs and 1 downstairs), which is a very good thing for us because it means fewer people = quieter surroundings!
The 5 rooms are norte, sur, este, oeste, and 4 vientos. We were assigned the norte room, a 35 sq.m. suite with a queen-size bed, 3 luminous windows, 2 40″ TVs, a small balcony, a small sala with a sofa bed, a hairdryer, other bathroom essentials (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste), and a bathtub with a jacuzzi.
The bathtub with the jacuzzi is the favorite of our 3-year old son! On our first night, he was in the bath until 11 pm!
On the 2nd night, we bathed him before going to dinner and when we came back, he declared he’s dirty, so we would let him bathe again. 🙂
Casona de el Castañiu Food Options
There is no in-house restaurant in el castañiu, but it has a small, lovely kitchen and a cozy dining area.
The dining area is close to an old fireplace with some household things of the olden times like an iron (like the old ones we had in the Philippines).
It is also attached to the living room with a tv, so you can watch some news or shows while eating breakfast if you like.
Breakfast is included in the price and it is personalized according to your wishes which is very nice.
The crew will tell you of the available options for the day and they’ll serve you your choices along with the beverages that you request.
We asked omelettes, cereals, croissants, and cola-cao for the kids. My husband and I had omelette, too, coffee, and pan con jamon y tomate (we requested twice because it was sooooo delicious).
They’ll serve you breakfast at the time that you prefer. On our first day, we originally preferred breakfast at 9 am. But my husband decided that he will leave early for Mieres and have breakfast there, so we sent a message to change our breakfast to 10 am.
On the 2nd and 3rd days, we requested an earlier breakfast. When we came down from our room, the staff was already there waiting for us. 🙂
Even if el castañiu has no in-house restaurant, but getting lunch or dinner is not a problem at all because there’s a restaurant nearby (I forgot the name), a mere 3-minute walk, just opposite the old church. We always go there for dinner.
We arrived late (10 pm), so we called the staff to inform them of our late arrival. We also asked if there’s a place to eat nearby, they recommended us the restaurant and made a call for our reservation.
You can just ask help from the staff to get a reservation if you wish to have dinner or lunch in the restaurant. The waitress was very nice and friendly, as well as the local people who were in the restaurant having some drinks.
Equipments & Services That Comes With Your Reservation
The reservation at this rural hotel includes a spacious room with a huge bed (sizes depends on each room), luminous windows, tv, balcony with a view, a small sala with a sofa bed (in some rooms), a hairdryer, other bathroom essentials (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste), a bathtub with a jacuzzi, free breakfast, free WIFI, and free parking.
Special Thank You To Casona de el Castañiu Staff
El castañiu staff were very nice, helpful, and friendly. We were personally attended by Almudena on our first day. Then by David on the 2nd day, and by both on our 3rd day.
They were patient, too, in answering and entertaining all our firstborn’s questions and stories!
We were playing in the garden after breakfast on our first day. Almudena was having her morning coffee on the bench outside, and #1 was asking her a lot of questions and telling her stories.
Almudena told me later that #1 was telling her a lot of stories. Even when she was already upstairs cleaning the balcony of the other room, #1 was shouting downstairs trying to ask her more questions!
David didn’t escape our firstborn’s questions and stories, neither!
We sent a message thru their WhatsApp number about the breakfast schedule and there’s no problem at all.
Things To Do Around Serrapio, Asturias
Serrapio is part of Aller, one of the municipalities of Asturias and it’s a very accessible drive to other municipalities of Asturias like Oviedo and Mieres. You can check out some of the top attractions in Aller municipality in this post by TripAdvisor.
If you visit Asturias by car, you can make el castañiu your base and go wherever in Asturias to explore.
We explored Oviedo on our 2nd day and I wrote a detailed post about it in One Day Tour In Oviedo, Asturias With Small Kids.
If we only had more days to spend in Asturias, it’s definitely ok with me to be in Casona de el Castañiu the entire day just relaxing, breathing fresh air, and just swinging in the hammock (there are 2) under the horreo all day long.
On our first night in this rural hotel, we went to the neighboring restaurant to have dinner and we passed by some cow manure on the street. Instantly reminded me of my hometown in the Philippines. Ahhhh, rural life is sooo lovely!
We booked our stay in el castañiu thru booking.com. My husband was the one looking for our accommodation in Asturias to make sure that it’s near Mieres. Once he found el castañiu, he then told me to book it.
I checked it on the booking.com app on my phone, but the price was 20€ higher on the phone app. So, I booked it thru the computer and thought that it won’t appear on my phone app, but it did.
So, check and compare the prices first on your booking.com app (if using) and on the browser on your computer.
Don’t forget to check the accommodation’s website as well, and do the booking where it’s cheaper.
