A super easy, quick, healthy, and delicious oatmeal with banana recipe that you can prepare and eat together with you kids. Perfect for busy moms!
Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Course Breakfast
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried oatmeal
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • water (enough to cover the oatmeal)
  • a bit of yogurt or milk
  • 2 bananas

Notes

1. Place the oatmeal and chia seeds in a pot and cover them with enough water.
2. Cook over medium heat and stir constantly to avoid burning and sticking at the bottom of the pot.
3. You can add more water if you see that the oatmeal is getting dry, but still needs more cooking time. It is done when it’s already thick and creamy.
4. Put into a bowl, stir in a bit of yogurt or milk to make it more creamy, and then add the sliced or mashed banana. Sliced banana for my 3-year-old and mashed banana for my 1-year-old.

Notes From Making This Classic Oatmeal Recipe

  • This recipe can also be made without chia seeds. I have made it many times without them because I ran out of chia seeds or just completely forgot to add them.
  • I use our homemade yogurt most of the time and only use milk when we ran out of yogurt.
  • The riper the banana, the better. So, there’s no need to add additional sweetener like honey.
  • This recipe might not be the best oatmeal recipe for you, but it is for me. What makes it best for me is because it’s so easy and quick to make, perfect for busy moms like me. And it’s super healthy, too. A complete win-win!

About The Ingredients

Oatmeal – is a cereal created from oat grains and is cut thinly so it can be cooked within a few minutes.

Oatmeal is a very nutritious food that contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is also high in fiber and protein.

Eating it regularly is said to help lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduce constipation, and help against skin irritation.

According to HealthLine, it is one of the healthiest foods that we can eat. You can read the 9 health benefits of eating oats and oatmeal here.

Chia seeds – I just learned about these super seeds few months before I got married in December of 2016. So, I started incorporating it into my breakfast in 2017.

Chia seeds are considered one of the healthiest foods because they’re loaded with nutrients that are very beneficial to the body and brain.

It was just recently that I researched if chia seeds are good for babies and small kids after a cousin asked me about it since my kids are eating them, too.

Thank God, chia seeds are safe for babies and small kids, so now I can continue giving them oatmeal with chia seeds without fear that it might harm them.

Banana – This is a no-brainer because I grew up knowing that banana is healthy!

It’s one of the most abundant fruits in our village and one of the most affordable (we had banana plants growing up), so we ate bananas constantly growing up.

There’s even a banana joke that I learned since childhood: that monkeys don’t have pimples because they eat bananas all the time. 🙂

Here’s 17 amazing things that happen to your body when you eat bananas.

Additional Toppings For Oatmeal With Banana Recipe

This oatmeal with banana is a very basic recipe. It’s like the oatmeal base recipe in our home, then I just add whatever toppings or ingredients that I feel like adding, depending on my body’s cravings.

I love adding nuts to this recipe, especially walnuts and hazelnuts.

Some other delicious and healthy toppings that can be added are pumpkin seeds, fried egg, avocado, berries, chocolate, pineapple, apple, peanut butter, and honey.

But really, the sky is the limit when it comes to additional toppings for this oatmeal with banana recipe! Just choose the healthiest ones!

Is It Ok To Eat Oatmeal Everyday?

It is definitely ok to eat oatmeal everyday, there is no harm in consuming it everyday.

However, you might get bored or tired if you consume it everyday.

Or if you really love oatmeal, you can eat it everyday for breakfast and just change the toppings everyday for variation.

I used to eat oatmeal almost everyday for breakfast before I did the 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge.

But during the challenge, I had to completely give up oatmeal.

Then after the challenge, I started eating oatmeal again, but this time no longer almost everyday. I learned to explore different breakfast options (I will share them with you on the next posts).

Final Thoughts

Is oatmeal a constant breakfast in your home, too? Do your kids eat it, too? If yes, how do you prepare it?

If you’re not an oatmeal fan, what do you eat for breakfast most of the time?

Feel free to share in the comment section below because I want to learn more breakfast ideas to have more variations.

I am curious what the chia seeds do for flavor to the oatmeal?  I know they are good for you.  I just have never used them in an cooking.  I’ve thought about it, but I guess I am not super adventurous when it comes to new foods.  They don’t taste like a nut do they?

Chia seeds don’t have a taste, so it can be put to dishes without altering the taste. Definitely give them a go!

  5. I eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast!  I really miss it if I am away from home and can’t have it.  I eat my oatmeal with Grapenuts and sunfower nuts on top.  Sometimes, I switch to pumkin seeds on top.  I find that oatmeal sticks with me better than some other breakfast foods and since it does have a lot of nutrition, I feel good about eating it.  The oatmeal with banana recipe sounds good since I do like bananas.  I will give it a try along with some vanilla yogurt (yum!).

  6. Thanks for this easy recipe of banana oatmeal. I’m actually looking to make it for myself, not for a kid 🙂 So, I might want to make it with a larger portion. I agree that banana is healthy, so I love to add them beside other fruit toppings. Do you think adding mixed fruits will make the taste even better? I really eager to make this tomorrow using your recipe 🙂

    1. Alblue,

This recipe is definitely for adults, too. I suggest that try first with few fruits. Like banana and other fruit as not to mix all the flavors in one go. But you can always experiment and please tell us how it goes.:)
