5 Amazing Benefits Of Quitting Sugar For 42 Days

Sharing is caring!

Today, I want to share with you my personal experience and the 5 amazing benefits of quitting sugar for 42 days.

In the Avocadu 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge that I did for 2 rounds, I had to give up sugar totally – no sugar of any form, not even fruits!

Each round of the challenge was for 19 days and I made 4 days of rest days in between. But during the rest days, I continued without consuming sugar of any form, making it a total of 42 days without sugar.

It was a difficult 42 days, but I am happy that I did the challenge because it’s completely worth it!

5 Amazing Benefits Of Quitting Sugar For 42 Days

The 5 amazing benefits of quitting sugar for 42 days are: losing weight and belly fat, fewer cravings for sweets, more energy for the day, less pimple breakout, and better overall health.

 1. Losing Weight And Belly Fat

This is the most notable benefit of quitting sugar that I experienced.

I was 65 kg (143 lbs) with 37.5 inches (95.25 cm) of waistline before I started quitting sugar as part of the Avocadu 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge.

After doing 2 rounds of the challenge, I was already weighing 59.1 kg (130 lbs) with a waistline of 34.5 inches (87.6 cm).

I lost a total of 5.8 kg (12.8 lbs) and 3 inches of waistline after quitting sugar for 42 days.

And I realized that it’s the sugar that was the main culprit for my weight gain.

Before doing the 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge, I was consuming honey excessively on a daily basis (thinking that it’s ok to consume more since it’s healthier than sugar), I ate a lot of fruits in one sitting (like 5-10 clementines or 10 figs), and baked cake often (husband was complaining all the time).

According to Eat This, Not That, a slimmer waistline can instantly be noticed after swapping sugary meals with high-fiber foods because when our body is deprived of added sugar, it starts burning belly fat instead of carbohydrates.

2. Fewer Cravings For Sweets

Even if I was very determined to do the 21-day fat loss challenge even if it means quitting sugar for more than a month, I also had a skeptical thought because I love sweet foods, and consume foods with sugar on a daily basis.

But I was surprised because, after a week or so of the challenge, I actually felt fewer cravings for sweets. Even if I was at the table with my kids and my husband and they were eating ice cream, I didn’t have the desire to eat what they’re eating.

Before doing the challenge, everytime we have something sweet like croissants or cake, I can’t wait to eat it. I am always thinking about it and my mouth is already watering, just by looking at the sweet treat!

3. More Energy For The Day

Before quitting sugar for 42 days, I often feel tired even if it’s still early in the day.

There were days that I was lying on the sofa before lunchtime or around 5-6 in the afternoon because I felt so tired. My husband would ask if I was ok and I explained that I was just feeling tired.

More Energy For the day, one of the 5 amazing benefits of quitting sugar for 42 days.
I definitely have more energy after quitting sugar for 42 days, just like these super active kids.

While doing the challenge, I was also reading and researching about sugar, carbs, and other related topics.

And I came across an article explaining sugar crash effects that made me realize that it’s the sugar that’s making me tired early in the day.

A sugar crash is a sudden drop in energy levels after eating a huge portion of carbohydrates, usually more common after consuming simple carbs, also known as simple sugars such as desserts. Did you experience it, too?

4. Less Pimple Breakout

Without fail, I always get a pimple or two on my face (usually in the forehead or the chin), few days before my menstruation.

But this month of May, 2 months after doing quitting sugar for 42 days, I was surprised because I didn’t get a pimple prior to my menstruation. I actually like getting the pimple because it’s an indication for me that my menstruation is coming in a few days, but without the pimple, I was a bit clueless.

According to several articles that I have read, improved skin is one of the many benefits of quitting sugar. The articles also mention that it can even lead to younger-looking skin.

5. Better Overall Health

After 42 days of restricting myself from all forms of sugar (natural and added), I feel way better than before.

I feel and believe that quitting sugar for 42 days has definitely made me healthier than before.

Consuming large amounts of refined sugar (also known as added sugar) on a regular basis can cause weight gain, and it can also lead to the development of more serious health concerns like cancer, hypoglycemia, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes according to Algester Medical Centre.

Other Benefits Of Quitting Sugar

Aside from the 5 benefits of quitting sugar that I personally experienced, there are still a lot of health benefits in cutting refined or simple sugar from your diet.

Some of the many benefits are a stronger immune system, improved gut health, better sleep, lower risk of type 2 diabetes, decrease risk of tooth decay, heart health improvement, less bloating, decrease risk of obesity, and decrease risk of cancer.

Am I Going To Quit Sugar For Good?

Not at all! I find it impossible to totally get rid of sugar for good because it is hidden in a lot of foods, especially those that are packaged (though we are slowly eliminating packaged foods, we still have a long way to go).

And besides, not all sugar is bad, only the added or refined ones.

I will do my best to continue avoiding added or refined sugar as much as possible, and rely more on natural sugar from fruits for my sweets cravings most of the time.

And as much as possible, reserve the consumption of cakes, ice cream, and other sweets with added sugar on very special occasions.

But of course, this is easier said than done. 🙂

  2. You are so strong giving up sugar for 42 days, I have trouble doing it for one day but you have inspired me to try harder as I really need to lose some weight. Sugar really is my comfort food. I enjoyed reading all the facts about why we need to eat so much less sugar as it really is in most foods these days. I will take your advice and give it a go, it would be nice to have a lot more energy.

    1. Hello Lily,

Thank you. I also thought that I can’t go that long without sugar since I also love all things sweet, but in the end, it’s really doable. We just have to start and keep on going.

Please let me know how your journey goes.

  3. Hi

Congratulations on quitting sugar for 42 days! Wow how difficult was that?  Sugar is so highly addictive that it is really difficult to stop ingesting it.

You did so well by losing weight and decreasing waist size.

That is a great benefit that you were able to have fewer cravings for sweets.

Having more energy is interesting as I always think of sugar being the thing to give extra energy.  You mention the “sugar crash” which is the low suffered following an ingestion of sugar and sends us reaching for another dose!

Wonderful that an extra benefit to quitting sugar is great skin and less breakouts of pimples.

So those were the things you personally witnessed along with many other benefits!

    Well done

    Best wishes

    Sheen

    1. Hello Sheen,

Thank you. Going sugarless for 42 days was only hard in the beginning. Once I got the hang of it, it became easier as days go by. And seeing the numbers in the scale changed was also a motivation. It adds to the excitement and the determination to really keep on going.
